Martina Franca, south of the Itria Valley, has an elegant historic centre, a ramification of narrow alleys filled with architectural details such as gates, balustrades and windows in the late Baroque style. The Palazzo Ducale is very impressive with its 17th century frescoes. At a short walking distance, the Basilica di San Martino is undoubtedly a masterpiece of Baroque art. Still standing, the old gates that once represented the sole access to the city: Porta di Santo Stefano, Porta di Santa Maria, Porta di San Nicola and Porta di San Pietro.
