Che il loro fascino sia terrestre o marino ha scarsa importanza. Le grotte del Salento sono degli autentici tesori nascosti che spesso celano al loro interno preziosi reperti preistorici. Gli studiosi sostengono che la Puglia, per la sua conformazione morfologica, sia la regione d’Italia più ricca di grotte e in particolare, che proprio nella penisola Salentina si concentri il maggior numero di anfratti e di antri naturali in grado di offrire una moltitudine di percorsi, tutti affascinanti mix di storia e natura. Le grotte marine sono indubbiamente luoghi di grande fascino ed attrattiva, alcuni legati a leggende mitologiche, altri divenuti sede di riti religiosi o semplicemente votivi, altri decorati da dipinti rupestri di eccezionale valore storico culturale, altri ancora regalano, con le uniche combinazioni di stalattiti e stalagmiti, stupendi scenari naturali. Purtroppo solo alcune di queste grotte sono visitabili, altre sono chiuse al pubblico. Altre ancora sono raggiungibili solo dal mare, altre, più o meno agevolmente, dalla terraferma. Ciò nonostante le grotte Salentine esercitano da sempre un fascino unico per via della suggestione che colori, posizione e conformazione esercitano su chi ha la fortuna di poterle osservare da vicino!
