Nell’entroterra salentino, più precisamente nei pressi di Otranto si trova la famosa Cava di Bauxite di Otranto, un luogo a dir poco magico e meta dedicata a coloro i quali vogliono assistere ad un vero spettacolo della natura.

La bauxite è un minerale dal quale si ottine l’alluminio e la cava di Otranto è stata importante fonte di sostentamento per gli operai che hanno lavorato nell’estrazione del materiale negli anni in cui il sito è rimasto in attività. Il giacimento fu scoperto nel 1940 e il suo sfruttamento è cessato solo nel 1976. Proprio a partire da questo anno che la cava di Bauxite si presenta così come noi oggi la possiamo osservare. Il piccolo lago di un inteso colore verde smeraldo che affascina i visitatori non è altro che il residuo di un giacimento di estrazione mineraria. Il tocco magico si deve alle infiltrazioni d’acqua di una delle tante falde acquifere presenti nel nostro territorio carsico grazie a cui si è poco a poco formato un laghetto la cui acqua ha assunto una colorazione particolarmente intensa a causa della presenza dei residui di Bauxite. La terra che circonda il lago appare di un colore rosso intenso e mette in risalto il verde brillante delle acque ed il colore intenso della vegetazione. La cromatura del paesaggio riesce così a catapultare lo spettatore in una dimensione quasi extraterreste, dando l’impressione di trovarsi in un luogo alieno, inoltrela terra circostante la cava viene spesso prelevata ed utilizzata tuttora per la produzione di colori usati nell’artigianato locale.
