Castro Marina è situata a meta’ strada lungo la costa alta che va da Leuca ad Otranto ed è nota per il meraviglioso scenario della grotta Zinzulusa che si apre sul mare. Le origini di Castro, risalgono ai Greci ed ai Cretesi. Nel corso della storia, Castro è stata dominata da diversi popoli, come i romani, i gotici ed i bizantini. I monumenti principali di Castro sono la Cattedrale ed il Castello. La cattedrale, fu costruita nel 1171, ha una base a croce latina, ed è composta da una sola navata con tre abside centrali, le pareti sono arricchite con tele raffiguranti la Madonna Annunziata, che è la protettrice della città, scene di vita dell’ Immacolata Concezione e dipinti di alcuni Santi. Il castello di Castro, è stato costruito nel XIII secolo sui resti di un edificio bizantino. Nel 1480, così come accadde ad Otranto, la città fu invasa dai Turchi ed il castello venne semi distrutto. Parlando di Castro, non possiamo dimenticarci della favolosa grotta della Zinzulusa: il nome della Grotta Zinzulusa deriva dal termine “zinzuli”, che nel dialetto locale significa stracci, identificando le stalattiti che pendono dal soffitto, e l’area della grotta visitabile è lunga circa 150 metri, ed è ricca di formazioni calcaree molto interessanti. Più a nord in direzione Santa Cesarea Terme si trova la Grotta Romanelli che suscita l’interesse degli speleologi e studiosi di fauna marina, in quanto con la sua scoperta fu accertata la presenza dell’uomo in Italia durante il Paleolitico superiore.

Nel territorio comunale castrense è presente anche un’area boschiva di 3 ettari, “il Parco delle Querce”, molto interessante sul piano scientifico, in quanto è ricco di specie vegetali particolari, ormai rare nel Salento.
