Il 18 Marzo di ogni anno in città e paesi salentini, come Giurdignano, ha luogo un rituale che affonda le sue radici nella grande religiosità dei suoi abitanti. L’origine della festa risale al periodo buio del medioevo, dove la fede era l’unico appiglio a cui aggrapparsi per superare le difficoltà della vita.
Questo rituale simboleggia il voto per una grazia ricevuta e prevede l’allestimento nelle case dei credenti di lunghe tavolate, dove si servono i piatti tipici della cultura locale, prodotti di terra e mare.
La tradizione prevede che il numero di partecipanti alla tavolata non sia inferiore a tre, a rappresentare San Giuseppe, la Madonna e Gesù Bambino, e non debba superare le 13 persone, ognuna delle quali ha funzione rappresentativa di un Santo. Il banchetto inizia a mezzogiorno quando il capo tavola, San Giuseppe, colpisce il pavimento con un bastone e procede all’assaggio dei piatti insieme ai commensali, recitando una preghiera. Ogni gesto e parola assume un forte significato simbolico, così come i piatti che si servono ai commensali.
I partecipanti si attengono rigorosamente il rituale, rinnovando in questo modo il proprio credo religioso. Alla fine del pranzo vengono consegnati ai partecipanti i famosi pani di San Giuseppe, in segno di ringraziamento. I preparativi per la festa riescono a coinvolgere tutto il paese per diversi giorni, e nella giornata dell’evento le porte delle case restano aperte dando ai pellegrini in visita l’opportunità di assistere all’antico rituale e assaporare le pietanze al termine del pasto. Le Tavole di San Giuseppe sono una delle tante occasioni per vivere il Salento in maniera del tutto nuova ed alternativa, considerando non solo il suo patrimonio naturalistico ma anche la straordinaria tradizione che lo caratterizza.

On March 18 of each year in cities and towns of Salento, as Giurdignano, takes place a ritual that has its roots in the great religion of its inhabitants. This ritual symbolizes the vote for a grace received, and provides for the installation in the homes of believers of long tables, where they serve the typical dishes of the local culture, products of land and sea.
Tradition states that the number of participants in the table is not less than three, to represent St. Joseph, Mary and Baby Jesus, and should not exceed 13 persons, each of which has a representative function of Saints. The banquet begins at noon when the head of the table, St. Joseph, hits the floor with a stick and proceeds to the taste of the dishes together with diners, reciting a prayer. Every gesture and word takes on a strong symbolic meaning, as well as dishes that are served to diners.
The participants adhere strictly to the ritual, thus renewing their religious beliefs. At the end of lunch is delivered to the participants in the famous bread of St. Joseph, in thanks. The preparations for the festival can involve the whole country for several days, and in the day of the event the doors of the houses remain open giving the pilgrims visiting the opportunity to witness the ancient ritual and taste the dishes at the end of the meal. The Tables of St. Joseph are one of the many ways to enjoy the Salento in a totally new and alternative, considering not only its natural heritage but also the extraordinary tradition that characterizes it.
