La Grotta della Poesia è situata a Roca Vecchia e dista da Otranto circa 20 km. E’ una cavità scavata dal mare nel corso dei secoli ed il suo nome deriva da “posia”, un termine della lingua greca del medioevo che significa  “sorgente di acqua dolce”, un riferimento alla fonte che in passato scorreva al suo interno. In molti però, soprattutto gli abitanti del posto, pensano che il suo nome sia legato alla famosa leggenda tramandata da generazioni, secondo la quale una bellissima principessa era solita fare il bagno nelle sue acque. Quando la notizia si diffuse schiere di poeti si recarono in questo posto per ammirare la bellissima principessa e comporre versi di poesie in suo onore. Questo spiegherebbe il nome “grotta della poesia”. Con il passare dei secoli, la grotta ha subito dei mutamenti strutturali causati dal mare che hanno portato ad una serie di crolli della stessa.  Nonostante tutto, sulle sue pareti sono stati rinvenuti dei segni sovrapposti uno sull’altro di figure preistoriche ed iscrizioni messapiche che sono sopravvissuti all’usura del tempo. Stando ai ritrovamenti pervenuti al suo interno, si pensa addirittura che in passato la grotta fosse stata un santuario di una divinità indigena chiamata  Taotor, il cui nome è riportato molte volte sulle pareti della grotta, anche se il significato dei segni è ancora in fase di soluzione.

La grotta è stata inoltre inserita tra le 10 piscine naturali più belle del mondo.
